I only just worked out that you could turn them around and am now getting a higher score but I dont know how anyone could get 500,00

Excellent game. Your score is the value of the pieces on the board - upgrading 3 skulls to a diamond will cost you 20,000 pts, but gives you two more spaces to use(that's why your score can go backwards).
